ODIA CALENDAR

POUSHA (DECEMBER-JANUARY)

Pousha month in the Hindu calendar falls between December and January.

Dhanu Sankranti marks the transit of the Sun to Sagittarius or Dhanu Rashi. It marks the beginning of Pousha month in Odia calendar. On this day, the devotees take holy dip in the sacred rivers and worship Sun God. Special worship is also done at the temples of Sun God. In Odisha, the month of Pousha is considered the month of plenty. Hence, after collecting the harvest, a festival of celebration is organized. A special delicacy made of sweetened rice flakes 'Dhanu Muan' is prepared and offered to Lord Jagannath and Sun God.

In Pousha month, at Jagannath Temple in Puri, Pahili Bhoga is offered to the sibling Deities from Dhanu Sankranti. This offering would continue for a month till Makar Sankranti. From Dhanu Sankranti, Goddess Mahalakshmi leaves for her parent’s home for a month. For this reason, at Jagannath temple kitchen, food is cooked by Lord Jagannath’s mother (Yoshada) and offered to Lord Jagannath early in the morning. This Prasad is known as Pahili Bhoga and is offered to the Lord Jagannath daily during this month.
