SRAVANA (JULY-AUGUST)

Sravana is another important month in the Hindu calendar, which usually falls between July and August. It is considered a holy month in Hinduism, and people observe various religious practices during this month.

Sravana month is particularly significant for the worship of Lord Shiva. It is believed that during this month, Lord Shiva drank the poison that emerged during the Samudra Manthana (churning of the ocean), and thus saved the whole world. Devotees of Lord Shiva offer special prayers and perform various rituals during this month to seek his blessings. Many Hindus observe fasts during the month of Sravana, particularly on Mondays.

Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Sravana month, which is called Ashtami, to celebrate the Janma (birth) of Lord Krishna. The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great fervour and zeal by the people of Odisha.

Raksha Bandhan also called Rakhi Purnima, a Hindu religious festival, is celebrated on Sravana Purnima (full moon day). This festival signifies and celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.

Naga Panchami is also celebrated in many parts of Odisha on the fifth day after Amavasya of Sravana month. The snake god Naga is worshiped on this auspicious day. Nag Panchami is observed to celebrate Krishna's victory over Kaliya Naga.

Gamha Purnima is celebrated in Odisha in the month of Sravana. On this day, all the cows and bullocks are decorated and worshipped by people. In Odia Jagannath culture, Lord Krishna and Radha enjoy the rainy season of Sravana starting from Shukla Pakhya Ekadashi (usually four days before Purnima) and ending on Rakhi Purnima with a festival called Jhulana Yatra. Idols of Radha and Krishna are beautifully decorated on a Jhula (swing), hence the name Jhulana Yatra
