Aswina month falls between September and October. It is considered an auspicious month for several reasons.
Durga Puja is celebrated over 9 days during the month of Aswina and ends with the Dussehra. Durga Puja is celebrated from the first day to the nineth day of Shukla Paksha of Aswina month. During these nine days, the Navadurga (nine forms of Durga) are worshipped. Durga Puja is dedicated to the Goddess Durga, who epitomizes feminine power or Shakti.
Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of Aswina month. This festival marks the triumph of good over evil, Goddess Durga’s victory over buffalo-headed demon named Mahishasur, who disturbed peace and threatened to destroy the whole Universe. Therefore, she is called Mahish-Mardini, meaning the one who eliminated Mahishasur. Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami In some parts of India, Dussehra is associated with the victory of the God Rama over the demon-king Ravana. On this day, Lord Rama killed the demon Ravana and set his wife Sita free from Lanka.
Gajalaxmi Puja is celebrated on Sharad Purnima, full moon day in the Odia month of Aswina. This autumn festival is associated with the birth of Goddess Laxmi, Goddess of wealth.
