DOES THE TEMPLE KITCHEN CAPABLE TO FEED MORE THAN 1 LAKH DEVOTEES ON A DAY?

The answer to this question is YES, but you will be surprised to know that the temple kitchen is capable to do this even in less than 3 hours. It's difficult for devotees to believe this, how come is it possible to prepare Mahaprasad in such a huge quantity, but as per below mathematical analysis and processes followed in temple kitchen, it is proved to be correct. Let's know the process to prepare Rice and Dal & Curry items separately.

Preparation of Rice in temple kitchen

  • As per Biswanath Samantara, Secretary of Temple Cook Association, it takes 12 minutes to prepare the rice in the kitchen once they are placed on the Anna Chuli (hearth to cook rice).
  • As mentioned in this page, at a time 9 Matha Kuduas (small earthen pot used to cook rice) are placed on single Anna Chuli.
  • 1 Matha Kudua can feed approximately 10 to 12 devotees.
  • After 12 minutes the cooked rice is transferred to the Bai Handi (big earthen pot used to serve rice).
  • 1 Bai Handi can feed around 100 devotees.
  • If we take the process of cooking and transferring to the bigger pot as 15 minutes, then 1 Anna Chuli can cook rice for 100 devotees in 15 minutes.
  • There are 175 Anna Chulis in the temple kitchen, so in 15 minutes rice gets prepared for 17,500 devotees (175 hearths X 100 devotees).
  • The temple kitchen starts at 9AM and the cooked food is offered to the Trinity at 11:30AM (Bhoga Mandapa Bhoga).
  • It means the cooks get around 2 hours 30 minutes (150 minutes) to prepare the food for the Trinity.
  • If in each 15 minutes the kitchen can cook rice for 17,500 devotees, then mathematically within a span of 2 hours 30 minutes rice can be cooked for 1,75,000 devotees (17,500 x (150 minutes/15 minutes)).

Preparation of Dal & Curry items in temple kitchen

  • As per Biswanath Samantara, Secretary of Temple Cook Association, it takes 13 to 15 minutes to prepare dal and curry in the kitchen once they are placed on the Ahia Chuli (hearth to cook dal & curry).
  • As mentioned in this page, at a time 27 pots are placed on single Ahia Chuli to prepare dal & curry which can be consumed by 300 to 400 devotees.
  • There are 45 Ahia Chulis in the temple kitchen, so in 15 minutes dal & curry gets prepared for 13,500 devotees (45 hearths X 300 devotees).
  • The temple kitchen starts at 9AM and the cooked food is offered to the Trinity at 11:30AM (Bhoga Mandapa Bhoga).
  • It means the cooks get around 2 hours 30 minutes (150 minutes) to prepare the food for the Trinity.
  • If in each 15 minutes the kitchen can cook dal & curry for 13,500 devotees, then mathematically within a span of 2 hours 30 minutes rice can be cooked for 1,35,000 devotees (13,500 x (150 minutes/15 minutes)).

From above analysis it is proved that the temple kitchen has not only the capability to cook food for more than 1 lakh devotees on a single day but also in less than 3 hours. Hence the temple kitchen of Lord Jagannath is the biggest hotel in the world, serving all without reservation or previous notice.
